Being among the top luxury watch brands carries weight. On the other hand, it comes naturally when it stems from a heritage and craftsmanship background like that of Jaeger-LeCoultre. This renowned Swiss watchmaking company was founded in 1833, with a clear direction from the outset to house all the elements required to produce a supreme-quality watch under one roof. And it has been successful from day one, nearing the 200th anniversary very soon.
That means every step of producing a watch is done in-house, with an integrated production process covering everything from brainstorming ideas and revolutionary ideas to implementing every aspect of production, followed by rigorous testing and the delivery of a final product. All this has been happening within their production facility located in the Vallée de Joux, a region known as the heart of Swiss watchmaking and the “valley of horological complications.”
One of the notable watches to emerge from this rare production approach in horology is the Grand Reverso Duo, distinguished by its proven iconic design and dual time zone functionality. The ultimate craftsmanship required to bring Jaeger-LeCoultre's authentic idea to life, encompassing all necessary design and technical elements, is an inspiring area to study. With the 100th birthday of the Reverse series approaching in a couple of years, let's depict its original ideas through a detailed portrait of the Grand Reverso Duo, while also spotlighting the innovations the Duo brought to the scene.

When you develop a proven aesthetic formula, it consistently stands the test of time. The rectangular case and the timeless elegance inspired by Art Deco are characteristic of the Grande Reverso Duo, just as they were of the very first Reverso watch that saw the light of day. The reversible case feature that made Reverso unique is also present in model Q3748421, which now comes with two dials —a feature that will be discussed later on.
Two distinct dials of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duo Left are paired with contrasting straps to vividly emphasize their adaptability to different styles. Left: 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, or 22mm Q.R. Black CrocoCalf Watch Strap with Italian Croco Grain; Right: 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, or 22mm Quick Release Tapered Milanese Mesh Watch Strap
The stainless steel case measures 29.9 x 48.42 mm and is 10.7mm thick. It is slightly larger in size compared to other Reverso models. Rounded lugs provide additional comfort during prolonged wear, while the striations on the case help conceal any minor scratches that may appear. Finally, the caseback features a perlage.
The most intriguing feature of the Grand Reverso Duo is its two dials on a reversible case, each with a distinct design and a special complication. The main dial features a silver guilloché pattern and light blue hands, while the second dial is black, marked by a Clous de Paris guilloché pattern, Eventail hands, and a day/night indicator. The main dial displays local time, while the second dial shows a different time zone, both set by the user.
One special strap that looks great with both dials, Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duo complemented by MiLTAT Green Genuine Leather One-piece Suede Quick Release Watch Strap
This special feature is particularly favored by frequent travelers since it allows them to set the local time of their current location on the main dial, and at the same time display their home time, or any other critical time zone for them at the moment, on the second dial. A day/night indicator is very handy here, letting the owners know when the best time is to make a phone call according to the time zone displayed on the second dial. Both dials are protected by a Sapphire Crystal glass.
The most significant technical asset of the Model Q3748421 is undoubtedly its driving mechanism. What is this movement so special that it leaves two distinct dials and the reverse case in second place? It is an in-house developed and produced manual-winding Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 986, which operates at a 28,800 vph (4 Hz) beat rate and features a 48-hour power reserve. Notable technical specifications, but there is something truly special about it.
Its most significant asset, which marks the entire authenticity of the watch, is its ability to power two distinct dials measuring two time zones. It also features a small seconds sub-dial, a data display on the main dial, and a day/night indicator on the second dial, all single-handedly. On top of that, both time zones can be adjusted simultaneously when the crown is pulled up.
The first Reverso watch came out in 1931, as a custom order by British polo players in India for a watch that could withstand the turmoils of a polo match. From day one, it was a headturner in both aesthetics and functionality. As the years passed, it grew into one of the most recognizable watches in general and an iconic piece of the Jaeger-LeCoultre catalog, representing both a heritage and a legacy of their entire production.
Sometimes the very essence of a classic elegance watch is best depicted when it is paired with a vintage-looking, traditional vibe watch strap, such as the pairing of Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Duo and a 22mm Q.R.Vintage Black Italian Handmade Leather Watch Strap with Khaki Stitching
Design inspiration came from Art Deco, which is understandable since, at the time of Reverso creation, this artistic movement was at its peak. But it has proven to be a timeless design that has strongly appealed to collectors and enthusiasts for almost a century now. The Reverso line is a symbol of elegance, functionality, authenticity, craftsmanship, and longevity. Practically a book example on how to come up with, develop, execute, and nurture an iconic watch.

Over the years, the Reverso line housed more than 50 calibers and produced more than 1400 models in several major groups, such as Duo, Duetto, Classic, Squadra, Tribute, and others. These figures speak volumes about the prolific work of Reverso's design and production teams. The production ceased for almost 3 decades, from 1948 to 1972, due to an overall shift of focus to round case watches. Still, during those years, the fame and sought-afterness of the Reverso line was kept alive, and ever since its production was revived, it reclaimed its iconic status.
Although it started as a unique sports watch, Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso soon also grew beyond those margins and became a symbol of masculine elegance and next-level functionality. Those two features are all that some of the avid fans need from the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Others love its swivel case, crafted from over 50 individual components, as well as the versatility and unique design ideas of the various models in the Reverso series.

Reverso's ability to be combined with different types of straps should not be overlooked, as it shifts its primary vibe from an ultimate elegant watch to a genuine sports watch, as it first came out as, and over a semi-formal/casual piece that fits any occasion in between. In summary, Reverso watches are designed for a target audience that values luxury, timeless design, functionality, and an extensive catalog of models to choose from.
